WORKBOOK AS BIG AS BRNO is an interactive guide for everyone curious about the city around them. It introduces to teenagers topics such as urban planning, transport, climate, health, entrepreneurship and civic participation. But don’t expect dry theory. Instead of definitions, the workbook asks questions, encourages discussion, helps students explore their surroundings, develop their own ideas and search for solutions to real-world challenges. The workbook shows that a city is not a finished product created by experts and left unchanged. On the contrary – cities are constantly evolving, and everyone can play a part in shaping their future. What makes a great place to live? How could an abandoned space behind your school be transformed? How can public spaces or the urban climate be improved? And why is it important to listen to other people’s perspectives? Through inspiring examples from Brno, the workbook demonstrates that even major changes often begin with a single small idea.
The publication is primarily intended for senior students at primary schools and junior students at secondary schools, as well as for their teachers. It can be used in regular lessons, project-based learning, or classroom discussions. It encourages creativity, collaboration and critical thinking, while inspiring students to see the city not only as a place where they live, but as a place they can actively help shape.
The workbook was created by the Participation Department of the Brno City Municipality, with content contributions from Barbora Dvořáková, an expert in locally embedded learning. It is richly illustrated by Tomáš Kučerovský.
The English version was created in response to the international character of Brno and is intended for children for whom English is a more natural language.
